As the weather cools down, we need to give our skin a little more love and a whole lotta hydration. How best to do that then to add as much hydration in one ridiculously easy step. But instead of switching out products for their much richer counterparts, the easier and more affordable solution is to just add one delicious step at the end of your routine to lock in as much moisture as possible. Introducing the Sleep Mask.
What Is A Sleep Mask?
Sleep Masks were, of course, dreamed up by those absolute skincare revolutionaries in South Korea. The concept behind the Sleep or Dream mask is to create a thick barrier on top of your skin to allow all those lovely, nourishing ingredients below to penetrate the skin.
We need sleep to repair and rest our bodies and minds. Not only that, but sleep gives our skin time to regenerate. Studies have shown that skin cells replicate and reproduce during the night. Wearing an overnight mask is like giving that renewal process a helping hand. When the body is in a deep, restful sleep, cell turnover and renewal increases. By nourishing the skin and sealing in all those beautiful products, we are really giving our skin the best opportunity to look and feels its best. The term beauty sleep was coined for a reason, and there couldn’t be an easier product to use to really make the most of it.
The sleep or dream mask isn’t an entirely new concept, but with so many brands jumping on board, our choices of masks have greatly increased. I thought I’d narrow down my top 5 favourites to share with you.
1. The OG and Most Lightweight Mask
Laneige Sleeping Mask was the first of it’s kind in my collection. It is a gel based formula which means it is much lighter and quicker to be absorbed. The mild formula is perfect at creating a barrier and boosting moisture levels in the skin. It isn’t sticky or tacky and feels like isn’t even there. Perfect for oily or sensitive skin, or people worried about their bed linen. This mask may not be hydrating enough for babes with dry, flaky skin.
Contains: Hyaluronic Acid, Evening Primrose and Mineral Water
2. For Hydration and Radiance
Youth To The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask is so creamy and lush, it really is an absolute pleasure to use. As the name suggests, this particular mask has been created for ultimate hydration and brightening qualities. The plant-based ingredients are heavenly but so damn effective. Containing current skincare ‘it’ ingredient, Squalane, this mask is so moisture rich and nourishing, that there is a visible difference in my complexion after just one use. The rich, creamy texture did look a little concerning at first, I was having visions of this thick cream that just sat on the face. Instead, it absorbs beautifully, leaving behind no residue. Skin feels soft, plump and pillowy and looks fresh and radiant. My current favourite.
Contains: Superberry Blend, Maqui, Acai, Prickly Pear, Goji Berry, Morniga, Sunflower and Squalane
3. Most Inexpensive Sleeping Mask
LanoLips Aussie Flyer. This is a good quality, highly nourshing mask. Full of lanolin, Aussie Flyer just screams hydration and nourishment. It feels quite thick and waxy, but surprisingly absorbs into the skin really well. Skin is left feeling soft, squishy and youthful. Definitely, one of the most hydrating masks I’ve used. I generally reach for it on a really chilly night or times when my skin is feeling pretty drained and in need of a big boost of love. You can find a more detailed review here.
Contains: Lanolin, Mint, and Coffee
4. The Sleeping Aid
Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon is a very clever little product. Not only does the beautifully lightweight gel-cream melt into the skin almost instantly, but it is full of encapsulated French Lavender to slowly release aromatherapy benefits all night long. This aids in deep and restful sleep. The Sound Sleep Cocoon also contains a wide range of ingredients and antioxidants to restore vitality, radiance, and cocoon your skin in hydration. It really is the most glorious experience. The most perfect before bed treat when I’m feeling a little anxious or stressed. One of my absolute go-to’s.
Contains: French Lavender, Patchouli, Sandalwood and Persian Silk Tree Extract.
5.The Game Changing Sleeping Mask
Allies Of Skin have gone above and beyond to deliver the most potent combination of ingredients in their 1A Retinal + Peptides Overnight Mask. This mask combats blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles. It reverses sun and free radical damage without irritation, all while boosting hydration. Targeted to fade dark spots, stimulate collagen, and defend against premature aging, this really is a game-changing, all-rounder mask. A true smorgasbord for the face.
Contains: Indian Ginseng, Peptides, Retinol, Antioxidants and Argan Oil.
Don’t forget that those little smoochers of yours need a little loving too. The Laneige Sleeping Lip Mask is such a good overnight mask for your lips. It’s thick without being sticky and lasts all damn night. You can still feel it on your lips when you wake up. This is probably the first winter where my lips aren’t flaky and cracked, and that’s all thanks to this little tub of goodness.
Do you make the most of your beauty sleep? Which mask is your favourite?
