You may or may not be aware of the famous Korean 10-12 step skincare routine – ridiculous, right? Or is it? Koreans are known for their absolute dedication to looking their best but how much is too much? While some steps are already the norm in western society, are there other steps that we should be including also? Recently, I have been seeing a lot of facial essences stocked on shelves and I have been intrigued, to say the least. While you won’t find me applying a 10 step beauty regime, adding an essence to my routine is definitely do-able.
What is an Essence?
Tracking down a definitive definition of the essence concept has been quite tricky. So, I enlisted the help of Australian K-Beauty Superstore, NudieGlow to shed some light on this.
“Also known as ‘treatment water’, essences predominantly add hydration to the skin but include other skin-loving ingredients such as antioxidants, niacinamide, and plant extracts. Think of essences as sheet masks, but without the masks.” You can read more about all things Korean skincare here.”
When Do I Use An Essence?
The same standard application rule applies to the essence – from thinnest to thickest.
Cleanser, Toner, Essence, Serum, Eyecream, Oil and Moisturiser.
But as with everything when it comes to beauty, this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule. Use as you please.
How Do I Use A Facial Essence?
Essences are typically a very thin and watery consistency. While it would make sense to enlist the help of a cotton pad, this would essentially soak up all the precious essence leaving very little left for your skin. Therefore the best method would be to pour a little into the palm of your hand and pat it onto the face until it has completely absorbed.
Do You Need To Use A Facial Essence?
In short, no. But you don’t necessarily need any other products other than a cleanser and moisturiser either. If you are all-aboard the beauty train you may like to include one in your regime to fight those pesky signs of aging.
My picks are –
- Tatcha The Essence
- Fresh Black Tea Kombucha Facial Essence Treatment
- Shu Uemura – Tsuya Skin Lotion RENO Moist
- Cosrx Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Powder Essence
Is an essence going to make an appearance in your regime? Or do you use one already?
