Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer Review

The beauty world seems to be divided over this beautiful but expensive primer, the Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer. I’ve read many different reviews with quite different viewpoints which makes me wonder why this has received such a mixed response. But after kindly being gifted this luxurious little beauty, I feel like it is my duty to put it to the test, share my honest thoughts and let you know whether it is worth the hefty price tag. Just for a comparison, one of my all-time favorite primers,  the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is $79 for 30ml, and the Tatcha Silk Canvas is $76 for 20grams.

Firstly, what is it?

Prep your skin with pure silk with this luxurious and velvety priming balm, smoothing and evening out the complexion while increasing the longevity of your makeup for all day, flawless radiance.

This little number contains pink and gold pearl to even out skin tone, Japanese superfoods to aid in anti-aging and botanicals to provide a protective barrier for the skin. Sounds like perfection, right?

The packaging as you’d expect is stunning and super bougie, but not in a gaudy way.  The tub is in the shape of a disc and is quite heavy. The primer even comes with a little spatula that allows you to get the right amount of product each time and to also make sure your grubby little mitts don’t transfer bacteria into the tub. The lid screws off revealing a gorgeous pale pink balmy primer.

The instructions advise that a little goes a really long way, needing only the amount of a rice grain to cover the whole face. Because you only need such a small amount with each use, I think that this little baby will last you quite a while, which makes it a little easier to justify the price.

The consistency is slightly balmy, but super lightweight. It spreads on to the skin beautifully. I find it best to warm up the product between fingertips to make it a little easier to apply. It doesn’t feel silicone-y at all, but rather quite smooth and as light as a feather. It instantly absorbs without any oily or powdery residue, just blurred, soft, slightly tacky skin.  My pores are gone. Gone, I tell you. I have giant gaping holes for pores and to blur and disguise them is truly a miracle. The wrinkles on my forehead are somewhat reduced and there is just a gorgeous luminosity to my skin – it isn’t shimmery, or sparkly, I just look like a picture of health. Silk Canvas acts as a protective barrier, that doesn’t allow your skin to absorb your make up, which in turn, is fabulous for your skin and decreases the amount of makeup you need to use.

WITH FOUNDATION

I trialed Silk Canvas with a number of foundations with not a whole heap of difference. My foundation applied really well, it seemed to just glide over the face with little to no effort. My skin did remain to look healthy, quite smooth and luminous. The main difference that stood out to me is how my skin felt – it was so goddamn smooth. My makeup lasted well throughout the day and there was no caking, fading or too much oil peaking through. I did notice that my craters of pores did start to become noticeable as the day wore on.

The only real negative I have is that the spatula is super easy to misplace.  It would be unreal if it was magnetic and stuck to the lid to ensure it didn’t go missing. But other than that, this primer is a goodie.

Will you be picking up this beauty? And now to spend my life savings on the rest of the Tatcha range, because I am mother flippin’ obsessed.

  1. This has confirmed my desire to buy it, haha. I have had my eye on it for a while, I have heard great reviews about it and this is another positive one. I love Tatcha 😍

    1. Hahaha – pores are the worst. Like I said ti covered them up really well at first but through the day they did start to peak through. So not entirely covered but still much better than normal. x
